Canons of Practice for Public Policy Research and Education within Washington State University's College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences

A committee of CAHNRS faculty involved in teaching, research and extension has developed the Canons of Practice over the past several years. This document is based upon an extensive review of best practices, principles and guidelines available both within the Land Grant System as well as from professional organizations involved in public policy research and education. Earlier drafts of this document were subjected to thorough review by CAHNRS administration and the Attorney General's Office. The document was presented to the CAHNRS Unit Heads on January 10, 2002 and was then set forth for faculty review.

The Canons attempt to clarify the nature of public policy education activities as well as specify the roles, responsibilities and expectations of the three distinct sets of participants associated with this form of educational pursuit: College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) research and education faculty, CAHNRS administrators, and members of the public. We strongly believe that adoption and implementation of this document will lessen the likelihood of misunderstandings and administrative delay in responding to public concerns over the involvement of CAHNRS faculty in contentious public education issues. It is in this spirit that the Canons were crafted.

This document also provides an effective mechanism through which to educate the public about the scientific method, the nature of academic and scholarly work, and the mission of the Land-Grant University. The anticipated improvement in communication and understanding between educators/researchers and members of the public should engender closer collaboration, more effective working relationships, and stronger partnerships among parties involved in public policy research and education activities in this state.
