Web Development Stuff - Tips, Tricks, Techniques, and Links for More Information
Media Stuff
- NewsLink - A searchable (by zip code or state) database of newspapers, TV and radio stations, magazines, and blogs.
- Pitching NPR - A lot of the news we develop within the college are likely candidate for stories on National Public Radio. They have a nice, short set of guidelines on just how to send them a pitch.
- WikiHow - a how-to site (and because it's a wiki, you can edit articles) about all sorts of things; I'm linking to the how-to on writing a news release.
Style Stuff
- AP Style Guide - at WSU we use the Associated Press Style Guide for all press releases and other news-media related communications; the WSU News Service provides answers to commonly asked questions, e.g. is it AM, am, A.M. or a.m. (Answer: time and day are given in that order, as in: 8 a.m. April 15.)
- Agricultural Stylebook - a stylebook is written for journalists who write about agriculture for the general public. It is intended as a supplement to the Associated Press Stylebook.
- The Elements of Style - not style in the sense of dotting eyes and crossing tees as in style as clarity, freshness and interest; the classic by Strunk and White.
Legal Stuff
- Copyright - This site thoroughly and succintly covers the basics of copyright; contains quick answers to one of the most vexing questions faced by Web developers: Can I publish this [whatever "this" is] on my site? Includes links for further information.
Web Stuff
- Wikiweb - a repository of tips and techniques for users of WSU Web templates.
- Bob Hoffmann's Web Tips - a collection of Web Wisdom aimed particularly at the WSU Webmaster, as these tips were written in response to the issues and pitfalls most commonly encountered on WSU Web servers.
- WSU Web Templates - the core files and add-on
- WSU Web Template Training - if you're unfamiliar with controlling the design of Web pages using CSS, these videos will get you started.
- WSU Graphic Identity Program - this is where you go to learn about the elements of the WSU identity program (circles, angled blocks, color palette, etc.) and download logos, templates for PowerPoint, and lots more
Syndication Stuff
- RSS in Plain English - What is RSS syndication and why should I care? This short video provides a good explanation of why you should care and what you can do about it once you do care
Code Stuff
- Web Developer's Virtual Library - a huge library full of tutorials, scripts, and more.
Podcasting and Video Stuff
- First of all, why bother with video online? Well, check this out: "
The Kelsey Group just released the results of a survey they conducted which says “59 percent of those surveyed claimed to watch online video, and more than half said they engage in some sort of response activity, such as visiting a Web site, going to a physical location or making a purchase.” From ZimmComm, an online marketing tools blog.
- Podcasting Basics - an archived training session (presented in Breeze) created and presented by students at U. Penn.
- Why is Web-based video important? - an article in WSU Today about using video to recruit, fund raise, and raise awareness of WSU. Factoid: Visitors watched 5 gigabytes worth of video on the CAHNRS and CAHNRS Academics Web sites in March 2007.

I'm Brian Clark, public relations and communications coordinator in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and WSU Extension at Washington State University.
